"A really great game that no one knows about"
Delta Force Xtreme is a remake of Novalogic's first 2 Delta Force games. This time however DFX features the Joint Operations game engine with over thirty different vehicles to drive. This game is a blast to play. If you were disappointed with Battlefield 2, like I was, this game is a must buy!! I would highly recommend this game, and for only $20 you can't go wrong.
Graphics 9/10
Personally I think the graphics are pretty good. The system requirements are not high at all. This game looks better on my machine than Battlefield 2 did (I had to run BF 2 on low because of the high requirements). If you have a Geforce 2 you can run this game. If you can run Half-life 2 or Doom 3 you can run this game with High settings. Everything looks smooth, from the vehicles, weapons and environments.
Sound 9/10
Sound is also very good. Each vehicle has its unique sound so you can tell which one is coming. The explosions are great!! You can really fell the impact of the vehicle crashes as well. The taunts are funny and the in game voice commands sound good as well.
Gameplay 9/10
Game Types and Maps
There are many different game modes to play. They include Search and Destroy, Attack and Defend, King of the Hill, Capture the flag, and Team Death match and Co-Op.
The game comes with about 10 maps for each game mode and some maps can be played as more than one game type. The Delta Force map engine is great. It is similar map generation system in the Worms games. New maps are easily generated. The game comes with a map editor that is user friendly. 60 % of the public servers have maps unique to that specific server. No extra downloading is required. This insures the game will never get too boring as there seem to be and endless number of different maps to play on.
Infantry and Vehicle combat
When it comes to infantry fire fights, cheap tactics like bunny hopping and dolphin diving won't work. You can also score head shots in DFX. Another cool feature that is present in the game is that if you begin to fall your parachute will automatically open. So you can jump off buildings safely. In Battlefield 2 you are limited to certain kits. In DFX you can choose which weapons you want. Your primary weapon can be a sniper rifle, M4/M203, M249 SAW and you can still have a rocket launcher in your inventory as well. This ensures that vehicles won't totally overwhelm you and will enable you to still fight effectively as infantry. However, vehicles still do give a slight advantage when used strategically. Most vehicles like the buggies and HMMV and helicopters are destroyed with 1-2 rockets period.
The vehicles in general seem easy to control in game. Also there are more than 30 different types of vehicles. There are like 5 different HMMV type vehicles. 5 different helicopter types. 7 different boat types. The list goes on. I couldn't even keep track of the number of different vehicles in the game. Flying helicopters is easy in this game. You use the lean keys (default Q and E) to ascend and descend, much easier than in Battlefield 2.
The only negative aspects of the game are the spawn sniping that occurs. Certain maps make it easier for the other team to hover over your spawn with a chopper and kill you when you respawn. It doesn't happen often though and if you can find a vehicle and not try to fight them you can easily escape. Also the online community is rather small. Unfortunately DFX is one of those rare and hidden gems. It needs more marketing and exposure. That is why I wrote this review. Even though the game can be played many different ways, most servers stick to Team Death Match, Team King of the Hill, or Capture the Flag. I would like to see more Search/ Destroy and Attack/Defend serves as those were a blast to play back on Delta Force 2.
Single/Multiplayer
The single player game isn't bad but it is boring considering how you can play the single player campaign online with Co-Op or over LAN. So there is no reason to play single player other than to experiment, test your controls and video settings.
One thing I noticed when I first played the demo is that even though there is no voice chat people still use teamwork. The game community in DFX is really great about that. They are still some jerks out there but every server I join there are people that coordinate with teammates to get the job done. Usually what happens is that the pilot of a helicopter will wait for people to hop on when they spawn. They will even land to pick you up or transport you to capture flags. The teamwork in this community is great I was very impressed.
Final Verdict 9/10
I purchase Battlefield 2 for $50 bucks and wish I had used that money to buy this game instead. I had more fun in the first 5 minutes I spent playing the DFX demo (downloaded at Novalogic's website) than I ever had with the10 hours I spent on Battlefield 2. Luckily I was able to sell my copy of Battlefield 2 on Ebay. DFX is a great game. For only $20 bucks Delta Force Xtreme is a must have for any military FPS fan.
